Easo
The new cruise ship arrivals area in Easo is the starting point for many walks and activities. It is the ideal place for an afternoon picnic while waiting for a return flight to Noumea. In the Drehu language, Easo means "the smoking fire" as during the years 1860-1870, whalers lit fires there to melt the fat of the whales that they had caught to make oil. Today a newly inaugurated tourist complex welcomes cruise ships on the same site and you will have the opportunity to buy local products representative of the culture and know-how of the people of Lifou at the stands there.
The Catholic missionaries who came to evangelize the island of Lifou landed at Easo in April 1858. On the promontory overlooking the bays of Santal and Jinek, they built a small chapel in 1898. Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated every year on December 8. The chapel is very easily reached by a small, landscaped pedestrian path. From the chapel of Easo, the panorama is unique and in the winter months remember to bring a pair of binoculars to watch the humpback whales come to breed just a few stone throws away.
A few minutes from Easo, Jinek Bay is a small natural aquarium, which you can explore using a marked underwater trail. Nestled between Cape Aimé Martin to the west, and the Easo Tribal village to the east, Jinek Bay is a natural aquarium and one of the most remarkable snorkelling sites in Lifou. You will see coral heads that are within easy reach of the shore using flippers, which make this unique site accessible to all and reveal glorious colonies of multi-coloured fish. It is a small, sheltered paradise and so... is deserving of your respect in turn. Please be careful not to damage the precious coral.
Located about a 10-minute walk from the cruise line reception area, the Lue Jajiny cave contains a small underground pool of refreshing water. It is easily accessible from the road near the church, but the descent to the cave is rather steep. Inside, is an underground pool with clear and refreshing water.
If you prefer tranquillity, however, check that no cruise ships are due on the day of your visit.
